Computer Vision Syndrome

Extended use of computers and other digital devices is one of the most common causes of eyestrain. The American Optometric Association calls this computer vision syndrome or digital eyestrain. Computer use strains eyes more than reading print material because people tend to:

Cavities are permanently damaged areas of decay in the hard surface of your teeth that develop into tiny openings or holes

  • Blink less while using computers
  • View digital screens at less than ideal distances
  • Excessive glare or reflection from screen
  • Poor contrast between the text and the background

Complications

Eyestrain doesn't cause serious complications, but it can be unpleasant, leading to tiredness and reduced concentration.

Diagnosis

Ophthalmologist will ask questions about your symptoms. An eye exam will be performed, including testing your vision and refractions.

Treatment

  • Making changes in daily habits or environment.
  • Wearing prescribed glasses for specific activities, such as for computer use or for reading, helps reduce eyestrain.
