Endoscopic Surgeries

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS)

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive technique in which sinus air cells and sinus ostia are opened under direct visualization.

The goal of this procedure is to restore sinus ventilation and normal function. FESS (like any sinus surgery) is most successful in patients who have recurrent acute or chronic infective sinusitis. Patients in whom the predominant symptoms are facial pain and nasal blockage usually respond well. The sense of smell often improves after this type of surgery.

Pre Procedure

Patient selection involves a thorough history and physical examination, a trial with medical treatment and, finally, CT scanning. The result is a highly selected group of patients who can expect an improvement of up to 90 percent in their symptoms.

Benefits

The main advantage of FESS compared with traditional techniques is that it is less invasive, resulting in minimal complications and postoperative discomfort. Scars and damage to the nerve supply of the teeth are also avoided.

Complications

Major complications include Extra-ocular muscle injury, persistent diplopia, nasolacrimal duct injury, orbital hemorrhage or hematoma, orbital foreign body, optic nerve injury, blindness, subperiosteal abscess, abscess of the orbital tissue, orbital cellulitis, cavernous sinus thrombosis, enophthalmos.

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS)

Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) is a procedure performed for the treatment of tearing (epiphora) due to blockage of the nasolacrimal drainage system. It is done by endoscopic and external approach.

Benefits

Endoscopic DCR is a highly rewarding Endoscopic procedure for management of dacryocystitis when epiphora does not respond to medications or repeated syringing of nasolacrimal duct. It is a simple, less time consuming, safe but skillful, highly satisfying surgery both for the patients as well as the surgeons. There is very big advantage of Endoscopic DCR, it is close 100% successful procedure, even if there is recurrence of epiphora it is again correctable fully with no residual effects.

Endoscopic Septoplasty

Endoscopic septoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure allowing endoscopic guided removal of the deviated part of the nasal septum. A septoplasty is a surgery for treating nasal blockage.A deviated septum is a displacement of the wall between the nostrils and often causes these blockages. Septoplasty can be performed under local or general anaesthesia.

Benefits

Septoplasty is a very safe procedure, but few common complications include bleeding, septal perforation, septal haematoma, toxic shock syndrome, and CSF leak.
